Summer Racing

Tuesday twilight racing

Tuesday twilight racing for 2018 will kick off Tuesday the 26th of September (the first Tuesday after daylight savings).

Races are open to kayaks, surf skis, waka ama, paddle boards or any other human powered craft. Races are approx 6-8km depending on conditions, with a focus on participation and encouraging new paddlers to get involved.

The Tuesday night races for the 2017 summer season will be broken up into two parts:

  1. Seeding races (First 3 Tuesdays). The few weeks will be seeding races with a mass start to allocate people into handicap groups for the series races.
No $ charge for the first three races.
  2. A nine race series alternating between mass starts and handicap starts
$5 per race or $20 for the whole series.
  3. The final night will include a prize giving and and BBQ - 11th of December

Registrations will take place from 6pm on the night of the race at the Kupe kayak shed. Even if you have registered for the race series you will need to check in to be be given your allocated start time.

Race briefing will take place at 6.25pm at Haitaitai beach, with start times from 6.30pm.

Race results:

We will endeavour to post results and photos from the race on the Kupe facebook page as soon as possible following each race.

Keep up with the series rankings and overall points on our results site.

Entry fee:

$5 per race or $20 for the series.

Series points:

For the post-Christmas series, races will alternate between a mass start and a handicap start with final series rankings calculated from points obtained in each race.
While there are eight races only the top six results for each participant will go towards the overall series ranking (you can have two nights off or two off nights).

Race points will be allocated as follows:
  • 1st place receives 100 points
  • 2nd place 99 points
  • 3rd place 98 points etc.
The final race of the series is worth double points:
  • 1st place gets 200 points
  • 2nd  place198
  • 3rd 196 etc.

To be eligable for points you will also need to:

  • wear a PFD for the race, and
  • register before each race (even if you have signed up for the series). We'll give you your allocated start time and make sure you're recorded as racing that night.

Prize giving:

A prize-giving (with BBQ or pizza) will be held after the last race on 21st March 2017. We are currently working on getting sponsors for prizes – more details to come.

Safety:

PFD’s must be worn by all paddlers.

All paddlers participate at their own risk and make the decision to compete based on the knowledge of their capability and the conditions on any given race night.

Cancellations:

In really rough winds (wind speeds of 30knots plus) races may be cancelled. Cancellations will be posted on the Kupe facebook page by 3pm on the Tuesday afternoon.
